As we reported a few days earlier, Maruti Suzuki will be unveiling a new premium MPV in the Indian market by mid-2023. Based on the recently launched Toyota Innova Hycross, it will become Maruti’s most expensive model. Now, the latest rumors suggest that the upcoming MPV could be called the Engage. We take a closer look.
Maruti Suzuki has filed an application with the trademark registry for the Engage nameplate. However, the trademark is yet to be passed by the organization. In case it is not approved, the brand will have to look for another name for its upcoming premium MPV.
Maruti currently has three MPVs in its portfolio - the Eeco, Ertiga and the XL6. The Eeco is the brand’s entry-level offering that is one of the few MPVs you can buy under Rs 7 lakh in India. Its price starts from Rs 5.27 lakh (ex-showroom), going up to Rs 6.51 lakh (ex-showroom).
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga on the other hand is one of the most popular MPVs in the country. It is loved by private owners and fleet operators alike for its value-for-money proposition and generous space for accommodating 7 passengers. It is currently priced between Rs 8.64 lakh to Rs 13.08 lakh (ex-showroom).
When compared to the other two vehicles, the XL6 is the most expensive MPV that Maruti is offering right now. It is based on the Ertiga but gets a more rugged exterior styling and a 6-seater option with captain seats for the middle row. Prices for the XL6 range from Rs 11.52 lakh to Rs 14.82 lakh (ex-showroom).
Now with the introduction of a premium model, the brand is going to ensure that customers who are willing to pay more get what they actually want. Be it in terms of styling, loaded interior and performance.
Powering the Maruti Eeco is a 1.3-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 80 bhp with 105 Nm of peak torque and comes paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. While both the Ertiga and the XL6 come equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol motor, delivering 102 bhp and 136 Nm torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
In comparison, Maruti will introduce a bigger 2-litre petrol powertrain with the upcoming premium MPV. It is expected to make more power and torque with likely figures standing at 172 bhp and 205 Nm. Transmission duties will be handled by a CVT automatic gearbox.
Upcoming Maruti Suzuki Premium MPV is slated to be launched around July 2023. It will be sold exclusively through the brand’s Nexa premium showrooms. Expect its price to start from Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom).
