Maruti Suzuki has officially begun the production of its much-awaited first electric vehicle (EV), the e-Vitara, at its Hansalpur factory in Gujarat. The production was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone in India’s transition towards electric mobility.
Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara will not only be sold in India but will also be exported to over 100 countries. With this move, the carmaker aims to make a mark in the global EV market, focusing on international demand, especially in Japan and Europe.
The event also saw the inauguration of India’s first locally produced lithium-ion batteries at the Toshiba Denso Suzuki plant in Gujarat. These batteries are designed for hybrid vehicles, further boosting Maruti's commitment to a sustainable future.
While Maruti Suzuki has entered the EV race later than some competitors, including Tata Motors and Mahindra, its ambitious plans signal its serious intent. The company targets a production of 67,000 e-Vitaras in the 2026 financial year, with the majority slated for export.
Despite delays in its original launch timeline, the e-Vitara is expected to feature impressive specifications, including both 49kWh and 61kWh battery pack options. The larger battery variant will offer an MIDC-rated range of over 500 km, giving customers a solid range for daily use.
Maruti Suzuki is not holding back on the features for the e-Vitara. The electric SUV will come equipped with a panoramic screen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ventilated front seats, powered driver’s seat, reclining and split rear seats, and seven airbags. Moreover, the e-Vitara will be equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for enhanced safety.
To complement the launch of the e-Vitara, Maruti Suzuki has announced plans to establish fast chargers at dealerships across the top 100 cities. Additionally, the company will introduce a dedicated charging app and over 1,500 EV-specific service centers in more than 1,000 cities, making the e-Vitara a practical choice for many Indian consumers.
The e-Vitara is just the beginning for Maruti Suzuki in the EV space. The company has plans to launch three more electric models by 2030, further cementing its commitment to India’s green mobility future.
