Japanese automaker Suzuki is all set to introduce the new Swift hatchback in South Africa, also known as the "Rainbow Nation." The new Suzuki Swift will be manufactured and exported from India for the South African market. Both India-spec and South Africa-spec Swift appear identical and share most of their features. However, there is one major difference between both the cars.
The India-spec Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by a newly developed 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 80bhp and 110Nm of torque. Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). The same powertrain is available in the South African-spec model.
The big change for the South Africa Swift comes in the form of the automatic gearbox. It is equipped with a more premium and sophisticated CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which is also available in the Japanese-spec Swift. However, the India-spec model comes with an affordable 5-speed AMT unit. A 5-speed manual gearbox is available as standard.
In terms of features, the new Suzuki Swift gets a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a multi-functional steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger, keyless entry with push button start and others. For safety and security, the new Swift gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), rear parking camera with sensors and others.
The prices of the Maruti Suzuki Swift for South Africa will be revealed in the near future. The India-spec model is available at a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It is positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and others in the category.
