Maruti Grand Vitara 7-seater launch expected in 2026 Maruti Y43 micro SUV to rival Tata Punch
Maruti Suzuki is aiming to further consolidate its position in the SUV category. Buoyed by positive response for the Victoris and the Grand Vitara, the car manufacturer is planning to expand its SUV lineup. MSIL will introduce an all-new 7-seater SUV based on the Grand Vitara and an all-new micro SUV in the period of next 1-2 year.

Maruti Suzuki is working on premium three-row SUV to challenge the likes of the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus. Codenamed Y17, the new SUV is basically a stretched version of the Grand Vitara. The SUV is currently in its advanced testing phase, suggesting that the launch could take place in the second half of 2026.
Platform: the new 3-row SUV will utilise the Global C platform, which underpins the Grand Vitara and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The SUV will ride on a longer wheelbase, and will have an extended rear overhang to accommodate third-row seat. It will have a more upright tailgate and signature LED lighting system inspired by the e-Vitara.
Powertrains: The SUV lineup will be offered with the existing 1.5L K15C mild petrol hybrid and 1.5L TNGA Atkinson strong hybrid powertrain options. While the former will come with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox options, the latter will get the same eCVT automatic transmission. The CNG fuel option will also be on offer. Similar to the Grand Vitara, the 7-seater SUV will also get an AWD (All-Wheel-Drive) layout.
Key Features: Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, ventilated front seats, 360-degree surround view camera, auto-dimming IRVM and others.
The Tata Punch is currently dominating the entry-level SUV segment. Seeing the growing demand for smaller SUVs, Maruti Suzuki is now preparing a new micro SUV that is expected to replace the aging Ignis in the brand’s lineup. It is expected to be launched in the first half of 2027.
Platform: the new Y43 micro SUV will be based on the latest HEARTECT platform, which also underpins the new Dzire and Swift.
Powertrains: the Y43 is likely to be powered by the 1.2L Z-Series 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 83hp and 112Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and an AMT.
Maruti Suzuki will opt for multi-powertrain strategy, and the small SUV is expected to get a 1.0L turbo petrol, and a CNG powertrain. In future, the small SUV could also get a series hybrid powertrain.
Positioning: the new Y43 will be positioned below the Fronx in Maruti Suzuki lineup. It will target first time car buyers who want a “big car” feel on a budget.
