Maruti’s affordable strong hybrid tech might deliver mileage around 35-40kmpl. Fronx will be the first model to debut with the in-house developed hybrid system.
Maruti Suzuki’s in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain for its future models could prove to be a masterstroke. Also known as range-extenders or self-charging EV system, a series hybrid powertrain is essentially an EV with a built-in petrol generator. In this setup, the battery-powered electric motor to drive the wheels instead of the petrol engine. It ensures higher fuel efficiency, smoother performance and eliminates dependency on EV charging infrastructure.
Unlike Toyota’s hybrid system, which is technologically advanced and expensive, Maruti Suzuki’s strong hybrid setup will be simpler and more economical. It will be engineered and developed for the Indian market with a major focus on fuel efficiency and affordability.

The carmaker will introduce this tech in several mass-market offerings, including the Fronx compact crossover, new-gen Baleno and Swift hatchback, Brezza subcompact SUV and Ertiga MPV. This move will make strong hybrid technology more accessible for Indian buyers. The hybrid-powered Maruti Fronx hybrid and Baleno are expected to go on sale in 2027, while the Swift hybrid and Brezza hybrid are likely to arrive in 2028 and 2029, respectively.
The Maruti Fronx will be the first model to feature the brand’s in-house strong hybrid powertrain. The carmaker is likely to pair the hybrid system with the Z12E, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Fuel efficiency is expected to range between 35 kmpl and 40 kmpl.
Maruti Suzuki’s scalable in-house series hybrid technology will help the company meet the stringent CAFÉ norms, while future-proofing its product lineup. Furthermore, the Indo-Japanese automaker will get a competitive edge over Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, both of which are still evaluating hybrid powertrains for their mainstream portfolios.
With the introduction of the new strong hybrid powertrain, Maurti Suzuki will offer a diverse powertrain portfolio in India including petrol, petrol mild hybrid, series strong hybrid, Toyota-sourced parallel-series hybrid, petrol-CNG and EV. The carmaker also plans to introduce its first flex-fuel car by the end of 2026.
