Maruti Suzuki seized the spotlight at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024 by unveiling its latest innovations – the Wagon R Flex Fuel and eVX Concept. These cutting-edge models were initially introduced to the public at the 2023 Auto Expo in Delhi. Now, both vehicles are scheduled for a market debut in the latter part of the next year.
The Wagon R Flex Fuel is an upgraded car that can run on a mix of ethanol and petrol. While it looks similar to the regular Wagon R from the outside, you cannot miss the 'Flex-Fuel' decals.
The hatchback is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine. This delivers a power output of 88.5 bhp and 113 Nm torque, with a standard 5-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission may also come at a later stage.
What is unique about this model is that it can use a blend of ethanol and petrol ranging from 20 to 80 percent. This eco-friendly choice is expected to reduce emissions by 79 percent while maintaining performance similar to the regular Wagon R. The powertrain has been modified with ethanol sensors, heated fuel rails for cold starts, and an upgraded engine management system to run effectively on flex fuel.
The production version is anticipated to be available by 2025, becoming the first mass-market flex-fuel car in India, potentially with a slightly higher price than the standard model.
Another showstopper was the Maruti Suzuki eVX Concept. Showcasing this model, the brand offered a sneak peek into their first electric SUV designed for the Indian market. Teaming up with Toyota, Maruti Suzuki is using Toyota’s 27PL skateboard platform, resulting in two sibling SUVs—the eVX and Toyota’s Urban SUV concept.
Both are spacious, measuring 4.3 meters in length, thanks to their born-electric vehicle architecture. The interiors showcase elegance with beige tones and chrome plastics. The manufacturer hints at exciting features like a 360-degree camera from a standard level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package.
Slated for production in 2025, the eVX will have a 60kWh battery pack, offering an impressive range of 550 kms. The eVX is currently undergoing road testing in India and aims to redefine the electric SUV segment with a starting price of Rs. 22 lakh (ex-showroom).
