Mercedes-Benz is all set to launch the long-awaited G 580 with EQ Technology in the Indian market on January 9, 2025. It is basically an all-electric version of the G-Class SUV. It comes with quad-motor all-wheel-drive system and offers a range of up to 473km on a single charge.
The Mercedes Benz G 580 EV looks largely identical to the standard ICE model; however, some EV-specific changes are made to give it a different look. The front fascia of the new Mercedes G-Class EV has a closed-off grille that has four-slat; however, buyers can replace it with an EQ-style blanked-off grille with illuminated surrounds. The bumper has been restyled and has cladding along the A-pillar to offer a rugged feel.
At the back, the Mercedes G-Class EV has a roof-integrated spoiler and air curtains on the rear wheel arches. It comes with a boot-mounted spare wheel. However, customers can opt for a square storage box in place of spare wheel. This box will have storage space to carry items like tools and charging cable.
The dashboard of the G-Class EV is dominated by the twin 12.3-inch digital displays. The display has EQ-specific graphics, while the traditional 3-locking differential switches are replaced. Now, it has been used for 'tank turn' feature and to activate low range.
The Mercedes G 580's quad-motor AWD electric drivetrain offers 579bhp and a peak torque of 1164mm. It is packed with a 116kWh under-floor battery pack. The electric SUV is claimed to offer a range of up to 473km on a single charge. The G 580 EV claims to achieve 0-100kmph acceleration in just 4.7 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top-speed of 180kmph.
The electric SUV can support DC fast charging up to 200 kW. It also supports up to 11 kW AC charging. It has an approach and departure angles of 32 degrees and 30.7 degrees, respectively. The G 580 EV can drive on sideward slopes of up to 35 degrees, while the breakover angle stands at 20.3 degrees.
The Mercedes G-Class EV is likely to come as a CBU import. Set to be offered in limited numbers, the electric G-Class is already available for bookings in India since July 2024.
