It is no secret that Honda is going through a tough phase in the Indian market. The brand's latest mid-sized SUV, Elevate, has received a positive response from buyers; however, its sales saw a massive drop in the past couple of months. In fact, the new Honda Elevate, called the WR-V, has been a huge success in Japan.
Due to WR-V's huge success, Honda is now aiming to make India as an export base. A new media report claims that the Japanese automaker is developing a global platform for its small - and medium-car portfolio. Moreover, India is likely to be the global production base for the domestic and global markets.
Codenamed PF2, the new modular platform will be used to develop a wide range of products including sedans, SUVs, hybrids and EVs. This platform will be compatible enough to accommodate both ICE and EV powertrains.
The report claims that the first model to be launched on the new PF2 platform will be an all-new 7-seater SUV, which will be positioned above the Elevate. The design and development of the new 7-seater SUV is handled by Honda's Japan and Thailand R&D centres. This R&D center is developing the SUV with a lot of inputs from India.
Engine options are yet to be revealed. The new Honda 7-seater SUV is likely to be offered with the same 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that powers the Elevate. Adding to it, the SUV is also expected to receive the hybrid powertrain that powers the City hybrid. It is reported that the production of the 7-seater Honda SUV will commence in October 2027.
