It is no secret that MG Motor is working on the next-gen Astor SUV, which will first launch in Australia later this year. For people not in the know, MG sells the Astor SUV as the ZS SUV in select international markets including Australia. The second-gen MG Astor is expected to make global debt in the next few months.
The new MG Astor SUV will come with a fresh new look and hybrid powertrain for the first time. The second-gen model was caught with heavy camouflage, which makes it difficult to spot the key changes. However, it is clear that the new model will have sleeker and more sophisticated looks.
The new MG Astor SUV is likely to get a hybrid powertrain. It is expected to feature the same 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid powertrain that is offered in the MG3 Hybrid+. This powertrain offers a total power output of 155kW, that's 207bhp. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a 3-speed automatic gearbox.
The hybrid version will rival the likes of the Toyota Corolla Cross and CH-R, and the Nissan Qashqai on sale in select international markets. The new MG Astor or ZS SUV will come with more features, better connectivity, improved safety tech and better interior fit and finish.
The spy images reveal that the new MG Astor SUV will have a completely new dashboard layout that houses a larger central touch-screen and new steering wheels seen in the MG3 and MG4. Other additions include a 360-degree 3D parking camera system, new gear shifter, and a digital instrument cluster.
The non-hybrid version of the new Astor are likely to receive the same 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that powers the new MG3. It produces 108bhp and 142Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
