Suzuki Alto has been one of the longest serving entry-level car in the Indian as well as global markets. First entered production cycle in 1979, the Alto has witnessed several changes in terms of size, dimensions, looks and kerb weight. If reports are to be believed, the next-gen Suzuki Alto is already under development.
The 10th generation Alto is reportedly to be around 100 kg lighter than the outgoing model. The first-gen Suzuki Alto weighed 545kgs, while the 7th generation model was 740kg in weight. The current model weighs 680kg, which means that the 10th gen model will have a kerb weight of around 580kgs.
To achieve lighter weight, Suzuki is expected to use lightweight materials in the construction of platform and engine components. Suzuki has recently introduced a new Z12, 3-cylinder petrol engine in the new Swift. This engine is lighter and more fuel efficient, and it will also power the next-gen Dzire. In fact, Suzuki will introduce a new hybrid powertrain using this engine. The hybrid unit will power the Fronx facelift and the Baleno.
The next-gen Suzuki Alto is likely to be based on the updated HEARTECT platform, which will be stronger and lighter than the current architecture. As a reminder, the current Alto's platform was found stable in Global NCAP crash test.
Thanks to lighter body, the next-gen Suzuki Alto will offer higher fuel efficiency compared to the current car. For reference, the current Alto K10 delivers close to 25kmpl. We expect the next Alto to return close to 30kmpl.
It is expected that the next-gen Suzuki Alto could receive electric and hybrid variants. The lighter body will allow Suzuki to install a bigger battery pack in its smallest car. This could be a game changer, as it will allow Suzuki to achieve higher range.
