Tata Motors is gearing up for a major update to its flagship SUVs, the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari. Until now, both SUVs have been sold only with a diesel engine, but that is about to change. Tata will launch the long-awaited petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari on December 9, 2025.
At the same time, a new report suggests that Tata Motors may also introduce strong hybrid technology in both SUVs in the future. This could place the Harrier and Safari in a stronger position against rivals that already offer hybrid options.

For the first time since their launch, the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari will be available with a petrol engine. Tata’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor, part of the Hyperion engine family, will debut on both SUVs.
This new engine will deliver 170 hp and 280 Nm, giving customers a powerful alternative to the existing diesel option. The petrol variants will be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions.
While Tata Motors currently does not offer strong hybrid engines in its passenger vehicles, the company is actively evaluating the technology. Based on recent reports, the Harrier and Safari could be among the first Tata SUVs to receive strong hybrid powertrains.
A strong hybrid system would provide multiple benefits, including higher fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and better performance. This would also help Tata compete with brands like Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, which already offer strong hybrid SUVs in India.
The SUV market in India is shifting, with more customers looking for efficient yet powerful engines. Strong hybrids fit perfectly in that space. These systems deliver electric-like smoothness at low speeds while offering strong engine performance when needed.
For Tata Motors, introducing strong hybrids in the Harrier and Safari would also support future emission targets, including upcoming CAFE norms.
For now, Tata’s focus remains on the petrol launch of the Harrier and Safari in December 2025. Once those models are on sale, the brand could speed up work on strong hybrid versions depending on market demand.
If greenlit, the strong hybrid Harrier and Safari could arrive later in the decade as Tata strengthens its portfolio with petrol, hybrid, CNG, and electric options across different segments.
