Tata Motors is working on an all-new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is likely to debut with the Sierra lifestyle SUV. The brand’s 1.5-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine, showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, has been delayed to the market. This turbo engine will power multiple Tata models, including Sierra, Harrier and Safari.
The Tata Sierra is likely to be the first model to debut both 1.5L naturally-aspirated and 1.5L turbo petrol engines. The new naturally-aspirated petrol engine will be offered on the lower variants of the Sierra. This will help Tata Motors to price the new Sierra competitively. It will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, which are offered with two petrol engines - a 115hp, 1.5L NA petrol and a 160hp, 1.5L turbo petrol.
The higher-spec variants of the Tata Sierra will be powered by the 1.5L direct injection turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 170hp and 280Nm of torque. However, Tata will offer this engine in different states of tunes.
The diesel version of the Sierra will get the new 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, Kryotec unit that powers the Harrier and Safari. Tata has already bought the license of this engine from Stellantis, and the Sierra could get the same engine in a different state of tune. In the current form, the powertrain produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque.
Tata Motors is currently offering 3 petrol engines - a 1.2L naturally-aspirated, a 1.2-litre turbocharged and a 1.2L direct injection turbocharged. The new 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated and 1.5L direct injection turbo unit will increase Tata’s petrol engine portfolio to 5 units. Not just Sierra, the 1.5L NA petrol engine is likely to power the company’s new compact SUV, internally called Tata Scarlet, which is currently under development.

Similar to the Curvv SUV Coupe, the Tata Sierra will come with both ICE and electric powertrains. The Sierra EV to arrive first in our market during festive season, before Diwali. Its ICE version is expected to be launched before the end of this financial year, most probably towards the end of the current calendar year.
The Sierra EV is likely to share its battery pack and drivetrains with the Harrier EV. It could be offered in two battery choices - 65kWh with RWD set-up and 75kWh with both RWD and QWD/AWD setup.
