Tesla India sales slow; 342 registrations in FY26 Model Y 6-seater launch likely at April event.
Tesla begun its Indian operations last year with the launch of the Model Y midsize electric SUV. During the FY26 financial year, the carmaker recorded 342 vehicle registrations, reflecting a sluggish start due to high import taxes and stiff competition from domestic players. Aiming to boost sales, the American EV maker is likely to introduce a 6-seater version of the Model Y in India. The company has scheduled an event on April 22, 2026, but hasn’t yet disclosed the name and details of the upcoming model.
Globally, the Model Y 6-seater is available with an 82kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with dual motor AWD (all-wheel drive) setup. It offers a claimed CLTC range of up to 751km. The EV accelerates 0 to 100kmph in 4.5 seconds, and offers a top speed of 201kmph.
The Tesla Model Y L features a 2+2+2 seating layout, with heated and ventilated captain seats for the second-row passengers and heated seats for the third-row occupants. It follows the brand’s minimalist design philosophy with nearly no physical buttons. Similar to the standard Model Y, the 6-seater version offers a premium cabin experience with high-tech features.
The 6-seater EV comes packed with a massive 16-inch touchscreen (slightly larger than standard version), an 8-inch screen for second-row controls, dual wireless charging pads, an 18-speaker premium sound system, a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, OTA updates, and more.
On the safety front, the Model Y 6-seater offers multiple airbags, 360-degree camera and sensors, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, advanced autopilot and adaptive cruise control.
In terms of design, the 6-seater version closely resembles the standard Model Y. However, it has a longer wheelbase to accommodate the additional row of seat along with an extended roofline for third-row space. Styling elements such as a blacked-out rear spoiler, redesigned 19-inch alloy wheels, and larger quarter glass further differentiate it from its 5-seater counterpart.
