Benefitted hugely from a strategic partnership with Maruti Suzuki, Toyota is now aiming to further accelerate its growth by introducing multiple products in India. The Japanese brand will introduce two new SUVs, which will be based on the soon-to-be-launched Maruti Escudo and e Vitara. Toyota will first launch its new mass-market electric SUV, which made its global debut as Urban Cruiser EV.
Toyota had showcased the Urban Cruiser EV concept at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo. While Toyota is yet to reveal the exact launch timeline, we expect the new Urban Cruiser EV based electric SUV to launch in India in 2026. This EV will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat based production plant for India as well as global markets.
The second Toyota SUV is rumoured to be based on the upcoming Maruti Escudo, a flagship ARENA SUV. It is likely to be launched sometime in 2026; however, Toyota is yet to make an official announcement on the same. The new SUV will be based on the Suzuki’s Global-C Platform that underpins the Hyryder and the Grand Vitara.
Measuring 4.28 meters in length, the Urban Cruiser EV rides on a long 2.7 meter wheelbase. The SUV is based on a new e HEARTECT skateboard platform. It will be offered with the 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs, with later claims to offer a realistic range of up to 500km.
The electric SUV will be fitted with a large 10.25-inch instrument console, a fixed glass roof, a digital instrument console, LEVEL 2 ADAS, 10-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and many more. The Urban Cruiser EV will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, MG ZS EV and Tata Curvv EV.
This SUV is likely to be positioned between the Taisor and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The new Toyota SUV will share the body panels and interior details with the Escudo, but it will receive Toyota’s signature face. The cabin is expected to receive a new colour scheme.
The new Toyota SUV is likely to be offered with LEVEL 2 ADAS, front parking sensors, powered tailgate and a bigger touchscreen infotainment unit. Toyota’s major focus is on selling hybrids, and the new SUV will also receive the 1.5L TNGA hybrid engine alongside the 1.5L NA petrol and CNG. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and the upcoming Renault Duster.
