Tata Sierra testing begins in India Sierra EV and ICE will be launched by October 2025 It will come as a premium alternative to the mid-sized SUVs in India The new Tata Sierra will get the brand's new 1.5L turbo petrol engine
The Hyundai Creta has been the top-selling mid-sized SUV since its arrival in India in 2015. The SUV in its second generation has become even a bigger hit with constant sales of over 12000 units per month. In order to capitalize on the Creta nameplate, the Korean brand has introduced the mass-market Creta Electric in our market.
Tata Motors had launched the Curvv SUV Coupe to take on the Creta SUV; however, it failed to live up to the brand's expectations. In another attempt, the homegrown UV maker is ready with an all-new mid-sized SUV which will sit right between the Curvv and Harrier. Yes, we are talking about the new Sierra lifestyle SUV that recently made its public debut in production design form at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
In fact, Tata has started testing the new Sierra SUV on the Indian roads. It will be marketed as a lifestyle SUV and will come as a premium alternative to the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara and others in the midsize SUV category. Tata Motors hopes that the Sierra's boxy profile, high ground clearance and rugged road presence in combination with modern elements will appeal to Indian SUV lovers.
The spy images further reveal that the Tata Sierra will have strong road presence with a boxy silhouette, raised bonnet and strong shoulder lines. Some of the design highlights include the signature Tata grille, split headlamp setup, a full-width LED strip at the front, LED tail-lights connected by LED strip, flared wheel arches with body cladding, large 19-inch alloy wheels, flush-type door handles and others.
The new gen Tata Sierra will keep design elements from the original SUV, which still has a huge fan following. It will have the signature curved-over rear windows, squarish wheel arch cladding, flat roof and high bonnet. The new Sierra will be based on the new ATLAS platform, which is compatible with SUVs measuring over 4.3 meters in length. It is expected that the new Sierra will measure around 4.3-4.4 meters in length and will be a 5-seater SUV.
It is expected that the Tata Sierra lifestyle SUV could also get a 4-seater version, which will have two lounge seats in the second-row. Tata will add several segment-leading features in the SUV to further increase its appeal among modern SUV buyers.
The big news is that the Sierra will be the first Tata to get a triple screen layout inside the cabin. The dashboard will be dominated by three connected screens, one will be the infotainment unit, a digital instrument console and one for the co-passenger entertainment. The lifesttyle SUV will share most of its features with the Harrier. It will come with a panoramic sunroof, a two-spoke steering wheel with illuminated Tata logo, an auto dimming IRVM, a 360-degree surround view camera, and more.
The Tata Sierra will also come with LEVEL 2 ADAS suite with features like autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, auto high beam and others.
The new Tata Sierra will be the latest SUV from the homegrown automaker to come with both ICE and electric powertrains. Tata will follow the Curvv's strategy of launching the EV first followed by an ICE model. If reports are to be believed, the new Sierra could be launched by October or November this year.
The Tata Sierra will mark the debut of Tata's new 1.5-litre T-GDI petrol engine that produces 170PS and 280Nm of torque. This engine will also power the Harrier and Safari. Adding to it, the diesel version will get the tried & tested 2.0L Kryotec engine that is sourced from Stellantis. This engine produces 170PS and 350Nm of torque. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual, a torque convertor automatic and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Tata Sierra is likely to share its battery pack and electric motor with the soon-to-be-launched Harrier EV. The electric Sierra will come with AWD setup and is expected to offer a claimed range of over 500km in a single charge.
