India’s SUV market is set to get more competitive with the launch of two new full-size SUVs — the Volkswagen Tayron and MG Majestor. These upcoming SUVs will take on the Toyota Fortuner and add to the buzz created by the recently launched Skoda Kodiaq, offering more choices for SUV buyers.
Volkswagen is gearing up to launch the second-generation Tayron in India towards the end of this year. This marks a significant entry into the competitive three-row SUV segment, which has seen limited offerings from the brand until now.
The Volkswagen Tayron will be positioned as a global mid-size SUV with dimensions of 4,792 mm in length, 1,853 mm in width, and 1,666 mm in height. Its 2,789 mm wheelbase will provide enough space inside.
Variants and Features of the Volkswagen Tayron
The Tayron will likely be available in two seating configurations in India: a 5-seater and a 7-seater. For the 5-seater variant, the boot space stands at 885 liters, which can be expanded to 2,090 liters by folding the rear seats. The 7-seater version offers 345 liters of luggage space, expandable to 850 liters with the third-row seats folded, and up to 1,905 liters when both the second- and third-row seats are folded down.
Performance and Pricing of the Volkswagen Tayron
Under the hood, the Volkswagen Tayron is expected to feature a 2.0-liter TSI evo4 turbocharged petrol engine that produces 150 kW (201 hp) and 320 Nm of torque. This engine will likely be paired with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Assembled from Wolfsburg-made knocked-down kits in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the Tayron is expected to be priced around Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom).
On the other side, JSW MG Motor is set to launch the MG Majestor by June this year. The Majestor will go head-to-head with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner Legender, sold separately as the Legender by Toyota Kirloskar Motor in India. The Majestor will feature a more aggressive design, including split headlamps, a larger and more prominent radiator grille with a cross-bar design, updated bumpers, and rugged wheel arch cladding.
Interior and Technology of the MG Majestor
Inside, the MG Majestor is expected to offer a more premium feel with a revamped dashboard, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a freestanding 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The new model will also come equipped with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, enhancing its safety features. With these upgrades, the Majestor is expected to be priced around Rs 43 lakh (ex-showroom).
