Kia India is gearing up to launch its all-new MPV, the Carens Clavis, on May 23, 2025. Ahead of this big reveal, the company has officially shared the ARAI-certified mileage figures for the Clavis, offering a solid base for comparison with one of its closest rivals in the Indian market — the Maruti Ertiga.
The Carens Clavis will be offered with three powertrain options: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. While Kia has not yet disclosed the mileage figures for the NA petrol variant, the turbo petrol and diesel versions have been officially rated.
The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine delivers a fuel efficiency of 15.95 kmpl when paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission). Opting for the 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic) pushes the mileage slightly higher to 16.66 kmpl.
The 1.5-litre diesel engine, on the other hand, offers an impressive 19.54 kmpl when mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. With the 6-speed automatic transmission, the diesel Clavis returns 17.50 kmpl, making it an ideal choice for long-distance drivers.
The Ertiga is powered by a next-generation 1.5-litre K-series petrol engine equipped with the brand’s Smart Hybrid technology. This setup delivers a maximum output of 104 bhp and 138 Nm of torque. The petrol engine is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Ertiga truly shines. The petrol-manual variant delivers 20.51 kmpl, while the automatic version is rated at 20.30 kmpl, making it one of the most fuel-efficient petrol MPVs in the country.
For buyers prioritising low running costs, the Ertiga also offers a CNG option, available only with the manual transmission, delivering an impressive 26.11 km/kg.
In terms of outright fuel efficiency, the Maruti Ertiga holds the upper hand, especially with its CNG and hybrid petrol variants. The Ertiga petrol manual and automatic both offer better mileage than any of the Carens Clavis petrol or diesel variants revealed so far.
For buyers focused on daily commutes and fuel savings, the Ertiga remains the go-to option.
However, the Kia Carens Clavis still has its strengths. It provides multiple engine choices, including a diesel variant that can appeal to highway users seeking better torque and long-distance efficiency.
While its mileage figures are slightly lower, the Clavis may offer more advanced features, design, and technology that could attract a different buyer segment.
