Tata Sierra is a name most car lovers in India remember. It first came out in the early 1990s and quickly became popular for its bold design and adventurous feel. But despite the hype, the original Sierra couldn’t last long in the market. Now, Tata Motors is bringing it back in 2025. The big question is - can the new Sierra live up to its legacy, or will it fall short like the old one?
The first Sierra was discontinued in 2003. Its biggest problem was the three-door design, which made it inconvenient for families. On top of that, it was priced high for the budget-conscious Indian market.
The car also had weak engines, basic interiors, and lacked modern features. Add to that Tata’s poor after-sales service and reliability concerns, and the Sierra simply couldn’t survive, even though it had a small group of loyal fans.
In 2025, Tata is ready with a brand-new Sierra that will be offered in both electric (EV) and petrol/diesel (ICE) versions. Unlike the old one, this SUV is loaded with modern features, stylish design, and the nostalgia factor to pull buyers in. It will take on rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in the mid-size SUV space.
The launch is likely around Diwali, with the EV version coming first. Tata is hoping the new Sierra will not only bring back memories for fans but also attract today’s SUV buyers looking for comfort, style, and presence on the road.
That depends on how buyers see it. Many are excited about its modern technology and safety features. But some feel the new Sierra has lost the rugged, tough image that made the original stand out.
The original was known for its no-nonsense build, while the new one is clearly focused more on tech and comfort. It comes with features like a triple-screen setup, Level 2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, and a panoramic sunroof. Plus, with both EV and ICE options, it should appeal to a wide audience.
Modern Design - The new Sierra keeps the signature side glass from the original but blends it with sleek, modern touches for a bold look.
Advanced Features - Triple-screen setup, ADAS, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof – the list is long and impressive.
Power Options - Buyers can choose between an electric or a petrol/diesel engine, depending on their preference.
Tough Rivals - It will go up against popular SUVs like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Mahindra Thar.
Missing Ruggedness - Fans of the old Sierra worry that the new one is too soft and stylish, losing the raw, off-road appeal.
No Body-on-Frame Build - Unlike off-roaders like the Mahindra Thar, the new Sierra won’t have a body-on-frame setup, which might disappoint those who wanted toughness and durability.
