Hyundai has just unveiled the New 2023 Kona lineup. The crossover has been significantly changed and redesigned in comparison to the current model. SangYup Lee, Hyundai's Executive Vice-President and Head of Design, said the New Kona has been created to express a “bold and dynamic presence” on the road, adding: “[The] Kona has evolved in every respect to embrace an even wider range of diversity, to become a true lifestyle-supporter.” The automaker has slated a mid-2023 launch for the new model.

The New Kona sports the brand’s new design language that was showcased with the 2021 Seven Concept. Its front features a sleek full width LED light bar that Hyundai terms as “Seamless Horizon Lamp”, a large grille/air dam with offset headlights, and a clamshell bonnet. Also, depending on the variant, the Kona will get subtle visual differences. For example, the electric model will get Parametric Pixel lighting on the front and the rear like all Hyundai EVs while the sporty N-Line model features a “wing-type spoiler”.
The new model will be underpinned by Hyundai’s K3 platform which is also used by sister brand Kia’s New Niro. Compared to the outgoing model, the 2023 Kona is 150 mm longer, 25 mm wider, and has a 60 mm longer wheelbase.

Hyundai says the new platform provides “maximized living space” in the redesigned cabin. Therefore, extra space has been created for the passengers seated up front and towards the rear. Further the boot space of the SUV has been increased to more than previous models 374-litres.

Talking about the layout, the dashboard is dominated by dual 12.3-inch wraparound displays that comprise of an instrument cluster and the infotainment system. Other features include dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, ADAS tech, and more. Also, to free up more space up front, the gear shifter has been moved to the steering column.
2023 Kona will be offered in ICE, strong-hybrid, and pure electric variants. The small 1-litre petrol motor that makes 118 bhp will be carried over from the outgoing model.
The strong-hybrid variants will include a 1.6-litre engine paired to a 43 bhp electric motor, making a combined output of 140 bhp or with a bigger electric motor that increases peak power output to 180 bhp. The latter will have an electric only range of 64 kms.
As for the Kona EV, it will share its powertrain with the Niro EV. What you will get here is a 64.8 kWh battery pack that powers a single motor resulting in 201 bhp of maximum power output. Its claimed range is said to be 465 kms on a single charge. The battery pack can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 43 minutes via DC fast charging.
