New Hyundai Kona to Get K3 Platform and Hybrid Tech, Same as 2027 Creta

Next-gen Hyundai Kona to share K3 platform with new Creta Hybrid powertrain expected on both future Hyundai SUVs New Kona likely to get fresh design and advanced tech

Hyundai is preparing a major update for the next-generation Kona SUV, and the upcoming model could share several key elements with the future Hyundai Creta.

Reports and recent spy developments suggest that the new-gen Kona will move to Hyundai-Kia’s K3 platform and adopt hybrid technology similar to what is expected on the next-generation Creta.

The new Kona is expected to arrive with a fresh design, updated cabin technology, and electrified powertrain options as Hyundai strengthens its global SUV lineup.

Kona and Creta to Share K3 Platform

The biggest change for the next-generation Hyundai Kona will be the shift to the K3 architecture, which already underpins models like the Kia Seltos.

Interestingly, the upcoming Hyundai Creta is also expected to use the same platform, making the two SUVs more closely related than ever before.

Until now, Hyundai has developed the Creta and Kona separately for different markets. The Creta mainly focused on emerging markets like India, while the Kona targeted developed global markets.

However, Hyundai now appears to be streamlining development by using a common platform that can support petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains more efficiently.

Hybrid Setup Similar to New Creta

Electrification is expected to be a major focus for Hyundai’s future SUV lineup.

Reports suggest that the next-gen Kona will receive a hybrid powertrain using a 1.6-litre petrol engine, paired with an electric motor setup. The SUV could also offer both front-wheel-drive and e-AWD configurations in global markets.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Hyundai Creta is also expected to get a hybrid version, likely powered by a 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid setup.

Both SUVs are also expected to receive fully electric versions later, with the Kona EV likely arriving first internationally.

Fresh Design Inspired by Concept Model

The next-generation Kona is expected to adopt a completely fresh design language inspired by Hyundai’s Crater concept, which debuted at the 2025 LA Auto Show.

Spy images suggest the SUV could get sharper styling, a more upright stance, and cleaner body lines compared to the softer design of the current Kona.

The new model is also expected to grow slightly in size, offering improved cabin space and stronger road presence.

Reports suggest the SUV could measure close to 4.5 metres in length with a wider body and longer wheelbase.

Bigger Screens and More Technology

Inside the cabin, Hyundai is expected to introduce a much more modern and technology-focused layout.

The next-gen Kona could feature a slim digital instrument cluster and a large tablet-style infotainment system running Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect software, based on the Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS).

Features like connected car technology, ventilated seats, premium audio systems, and advanced driver assistance features are also expected.

Expected Launch Timeline

According to reports from South Korea, the next-generation Hyundai Kona could make its global debut in the second half of 2026.

The all-new Creta is expected to follow later, with production likely starting sometime in 2027.
