Skoda Auto has unveiled the all-new Kodiaq, the brand’s flagship SUV. Being a next-gen model, the new Skoda Kodiaq gets updated styling, different interiors and updated powertrain features. The Kodiaq comes a few weeks after the reveal of the new VW Tiguan, with which it shares its MQB-EVO platform. However, the two look markedly different. We take a closer look.
The new Kodiaq is Skoda’s first production model to use the brand’s new ‘Modern Solid’ design philosophy that was previewed on last year’s 7S concept. Compared to the last-gen model, the SUV now gets more rugged and squared-off styling. The front end features a large hexagonal grille flanked by signature Skoda headlights but sleeker, an optional LED lightbar, a strongly sculpted bonnet and the automaker’s new logo.
The new Kodiaq’s side profile gets much more flared and rugged-looking wheel arches with black body cladding, a strong shoulder line, a contrasting silver panel on the D pillar, and new alloy wheels. At the rear, it gets a slightly angled bootlid, flat C-shaped LED tail lights, and an aluminium skid plate on the rear bumper.
Moving inside, the Kodiaq gets a completely overhauled interior that is also largely shared with the new Superb sedan. It gets a 10- or 13-inch infotainment system, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, optional HUD, and new physical ‘smart dials’ on the centre console. All three of them house a colour display, with the middle one controlling infotainment volume, map zoom, driving modes, and the AC while the outer two rotary knobs adjust the climate control functions for the driver and passenger.
The interior can be specced in one of four ‘design selection’ packages called Loft, Lounge, and two variations of Ecosuite, which offers sustainable materials and helps reduce the Kodiaq’s carbon footprint.
Škoda is offering a 1.5-litre TSI petrol, a 2.0-litre TSI petrol, or a 2-litre TDI powertrain on the new Kodiaq. The 1.5-litre unit makes 150 bhp with 250 Nm of peak torque and gets mild-hybrid assistance. The same motor also does duty on the Kodiaq plug-in Hybrid model, where it makes a combined 204 bhp with 350 Nm of max torque. It is paired with a 25.7 kWh battery pack which can be charged at speeds of up to 50 kW and offers a range of over 100 km.
Coming to the 2-litre motors, the TSI pumps 204 bhp with 320 Nm of max torque. Meanwhile, the TDI unit comes in two states of tune, 150 bhp with 360 Nm on the 4x2 variants, or 190 bhp with 400 Nm on the 4x4 models. A 7-speed DSG automatic transmission is the only gearbox option across all models.
Škoda may launch the new Kodiaq in India sometime in 2024. It remains to be seen however what powertrain options the SUV will get here.
The current-gen Kodiaq is on sale in India, with prices starting from Rs 38.50 lakh (ex-showroom), and going up to Rs 41.95 lakh (ex-showroom).
