Honda Cars India currently has two sedan offerings in its product lineup – the Amaze and the City – catering to different sets of buyers. While the Amaze is known for its practicality and affordability, the City provides premium features, a spacious cabin, and refined performance. However, these two cars can be compared based on their design language, features, performance, and value for money to help buyers decide which Honda sedan best suits their requirements. Let’s delve into how the Honda Amaze and City sedans stack up against each other – where they shine and where they overlap.
Recently, the Amaze compact sedan entered its third generation with comprehensive upgrades, priced from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10.90 lakh. The model lineup is offered in three trims – V, VX, and ZX – which are further spread across six variants: three manual and three automatic. The V, VX, and ZX manual variants are priced at Rs 8 lakh, Rs 9.10 lakh, and Rs 9.70 lakh, respectively, while their CVT automatic counterparts are priced at Rs 9.20 lakh, Rs 10 lakh, and Rs 10.90 lakh, respectively.
The Honda City is priced within the range of Rs 11.82 lakh to Rs 16.35 lakh. Additionally, there are two strong hybrid variants – V and ZX – priced at Rs 19 lakh and Rs 20.50 lakh, respectively. All prices mentioned are ex-showroom, Delhi.
There is a significant price difference between the two Honda sedans. The top-end variant of the Honda City is nearly twice as expensive as the top-end variant of the Honda Amaze.
The all-new Honda Amaze adopts several design elements from the City and Elevate. The compact sedan now features a hexagonal grille, new headlamps with brow-like LED DRLs, and a chrome trim. The bumper integrates LED projector fog lamps and a central air dam. The Honda Amaze is equipped with newly designed 15-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels, City-like taillamps, and a revised rear bumper with reflectors at both edges. The Honda Amaze is being offered in six colour schemes: Obsidian Blue Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, Meteoroid Gray Metallic, Golden Brown Metallic, Lunar Silver Metallic, and Radiant Red Metallic. The overall dimensions of the sedan are 3,995mm in length, 1,733mm in width, and 1,500mm in height.
The fifth-generation Honda City received a mid-life update in March 2023. The sedan features minor cosmetic updates, including a front grille with a slimmer chrome bar, revised front and rear bumpers, and sweptback taillamps with nine LEDs. While the lower variants of the Honda City feature a grille with vertical slats, the higher trims come with a honeycomb pattern. Other updates include newly designed alloy wheels, repositioned reflectors, and a spoiler on the trunk. With the mid-life update, the Honda City is available in a new Obsidian Blue Pearl paint scheme. The Honda City is longer and wider than the Amaze, measuring 4,574mm to 4,583mm in length and 1,748mm in width, though its height of 1,489mm is slightly shorter than the Amaze.
Significant interior changes give the new Amaze a fresh appeal. Its dashboard design and new multi-function steering wheel are borrowed from the Honda Elevate. The lower trims of the Amaze feature an 8-inch free-standing touchscreen infotainment system, while the higher variants get a 10.25-inch unit. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features of the Amaze include a 7-inch MID for the semi-digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, auto climate control, rear AC vents, a rear seat armrest, a push-button start/stop system, and Honda Connect connected car features. However, the Amaze lacks a sunroof.
Safety enhancements include Level 2 ADAS, making the Amaze India’s first compact sedan and the most affordable car to offer this suite. The Amaze is also equipped with features like a lane watch camera (a segment-first), hill start assist, six airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control.
Being a premium offering, the Honda City comes with a more extensive feature list. The petrol and hybrid versions of the Honda City feature beige and black or ivory and black interior themes. Premium features like ambient lighting, leather upholstery, auto-folding wing mirrors, a rear sunshade, and an auto-dimming IRVM are reserved for higher trims. The Honda City also offers a sunroof, a wireless charger (hybrid only), connected car technology, keyless entry, an electronic parking brake (hybrid only), and a host of safety features, including ADAS from the SV trim onwards.
The third-generation Honda Amaze continues with its 1.2L four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or CVT automatic gearbox (with paddle shifters). This engine produces a maximum power output of 90bhp and a peak torque of 110Nm. Honda claims that the Amaze delivers a fuel efficiency of 18.65kmpl with the manual transmission and 19.46kmpl with the CVT.
The Honda City is available with two powertrain options – a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5L petrol-hybrid Atkinson Cycle engine. The former is paired with either a 6-speed manual or CVT automatic gearbox, while the latter comes with an eCVT transmission. The hybrid powertrain delivers a claimed mileage of 27.13kmpl, while the petrol versions of the City offer a fuel efficiency of 17.8kmpl with the manual transmission and 18.4kmpl with the CVT.
