It is no secret that Suzuki is developing an all-new entry-level hybrid system, which will power a wide range of Maruti Suzuki cars in India. The company is currently selling two hybrid models, the Grand Vitara and Invicto MPV, both are offered with Toyota's series-parallel hybrid system. However, this hybrid tech proves to be expensive for smaller cars.
Maruti Suzuki is developing a new in-house series hybrid powertrain (codenamed: HEV), which will be cheaper to produce than a series-parallel and parallel-only hybrid. In this hybrid setup, the petrol engine works as a generator or range extender. Instead of directly powering the vehicle, the engine produces electricity to power an electric motor that drives the wheels. For people not in the know, Nissan's Note, which has been spotted testing in India, is equipped with a series hybrid engine.
The new Maruti Suzuki's hybrid system will comprise of an all-new Z12E, 3-cylinder engine, a smaller battery pack of around 1.5-2kWh and an electric motor. The Z12E is the same powertrain that debuts in the new Swift, and this engine will act as a generator to charge the battery pack.
The new Maruti Suzuki's series hybrid powertrain will debut in the Fronx facelift, which is likely to be launched sometime in 2025. This hybrid system will also power the next-gen Baleno, new Swift, an all-new entry-level MPV and the next-gen Brezza. The next Baleno is scheduled to be launched in 2026, while the new Swift hybrid will arrive in 2027.
Maruti Suzuki's entry-level MPV, codenamed YDB, will be based on the Spacia MPV on sale in Japan. The hybrid Maruti Suzuki cars are likely to offer a fuel efficiency of over 35kmpl. In fact, the new Maruti's series hybrid powertrain will help the company to meet future CAFE norms, which are set to get stricter in 2027.
Maruti’s HEV-powered cars are expected to give exceptional fuel economy to the tune of 35-40kpl on the test cycle and will also be a key technology to meeting future CAFE targets, which are due to get stricter in 2027.
