It is no secret that hybrid cars are gaining popularity among car buyers in India. Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are ruling the hybrid category with popular models like Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Innova Hycross and Invicto. In fact, MSIL is planning to introduce its own affordable series-hybrid powertrain for entry-level models in India in 2025. The big news is that Mahindra has started developing strong hybrid cars for the Indian market.
The first Mahindra petrol-hybrid model is reportedly to be launched in the country in 2026. The report further claims that the new Mahindra XUV700 and the Scorpio will be the first Mahindra SUVs to come equipped with petrol-hybrid powertrains. The next-gen Mahindra XUV700 is likely to be launched in our market in 2026.
Mahindra has announced to invest a total of INR 27,000 crore in the coming five to seven years in its automotive business. The company aims to have a portfolio of 9 ICE SUVs and 7 electric vehicles in the country in the next 2-3 years.
Mahindra is also in talks with Skoda Auto Volkswagen India PVT LTD for a strategic partnership in India. The homegrown automaker is aiming to acquire 50% shares in VW Group's Indian arm. If the two companies sign an agreement to work together, Skoda VW will ask Mahindra to share its hybrid technology. This will be more cost-effective compared to the VW Group making huge investments to develop its own hybrid tech.
Mahindra and Skoda Auto Volkswagen are holding talks on possible joint venture, which allows both makers to share technology and vehicle platforms. A strong hybrid engine comprises an internal combustion engine and electric motors to power the vehicle, resulting in better mileage and lower emissions.
Not just Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia are also exploring strong hybrid cars for the Indian market. Hyundai is planning to introduce its first petrol-hybrid SUV in 2027. It will be a 7-seater SUV to rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari. On the other hand, Kia is planning to introduce its new compact SUV in the country. Rumoured to be called the Kia Syros, the new compact SUV could be Kia's first model to feature a hybrid powertrain in India.
