Hyundai Could Launch a Thar Roxx Rival SUV in India

Hyundai could enter the lifestyle SUV segment with a rugged new model. The SUV may rival Mahindra Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha. It could feature a boxy design, high ground clearance and AWD.

Hyundai is preparing to expand its SUV lineup in India with a new lifestyle-focused model that could compete with the likes of the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha.

The Korean carmaker currently has a strong presence in the SUV market with models like the Venue, Creta, Alcazar and Creta Electric. However, it does not have a product in the growing lifestyle SUV segment, which has gained popularity among buyers looking for rugged styling and off-road capability. A new rugged SUV could help Hyundai enter this space and attract customers who want something different from traditional urban SUVs.

Hyundai Showcased the Boulder Concept

Hyundai had showcased the Boulder concept at the New York Auto Show, giving a glimpse of what its future lifestyle SUV could look like. The concept featured a boxy design with a tall stance, high ground clearance and a rugged appearance. It followed a completely different design approach compared to Hyundai's current SUV lineup, focusing more on adventure and outdoor use. The production version, if approved for India, could carry forward similar styling elements with a strong road presence.

Could Challenge Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha

The lifestyle SUV segment has seen strong growth in recent years. The success of the Mahindra Thar and the introduction of the Thar Roxx show that there is demand for vehicles that offer a mix of everyday usability and off-road ability. Hyundai's upcoming SUV could compete directly with these models by offering a premium cabin, modern features and Hyundai's focus on comfort. Unlike traditional off-road vehicles, Hyundai could position its SUV as a more family-friendly option with better interior features and daily usability.

Expected Design and Features

The SUV is expected to have a rugged exterior with design elements such as a boxy silhouette, upright front end, muscular wheel arches and increased ground clearance. The concept also featured a tough-looking design with a focus on practicality. The production model could come with features like a large touchscreen infotainment system, connected car technology, advanced safety features and a digital instrument cluster. Hyundai could also offer modern driver assistance features, which are becoming common across its lineup.

Four-Wheel Drive Capability Could Be Key

To compete with the Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha, Hyundai would need to offer proper off-road capability. The production version could get features such as an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive system, multiple drive modes and stronger suspension setup. However, Hyundai has not confirmed any technical details about the upcoming SUV yet.
