Maruti Suzuki Fronx hybrid to launch over 35 kmpl Renault Bridger and Honda WR-V to launch with hybrid engines Next-gen Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue to get self-charging hybrid engine
Seeing the rising fuel prices, car manufacturers are looking at alternate fuel options to drive sales in the market. In fact, Indian car buyers are actively looking at fuel efficiency without giving up SUV styling and practicality. While few brands are betting on pure EVs, most automakers are now developing self-charging strong hybrid (HEV) and series hybrid powertrains specifically for the sub-4m and compact crossover segments.
These engines are designed to deliver over 30kmpl of real-world fuel efficiency. Here is a look at the upcoming hybrid compact SUVs set to transform the market.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid
Maruti Suzuki has officially announced its entry-level series-hybrid powertrain, also known as range-extenders. In this hybrid tech, the combustion engine functions strictly as an electric generator to charge the battery pack, while an electric motor drives the front wheels.
Engine Setup: it will be based on a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a small battery pack.
Target Mileage: 35+ kmpl
Key Details: this powertrain will be manufactured locally, and will power a wide range of Maruti compact cars in India. It will be significantly cheaper than the series-parallel or parallel hybrids.
Next-gen Kia Sonet Hybrid and Hyundai Venue hybrid
Kia has started working on the next-generation Sonet, codenamed QY2E, which has been caught testing multiple times on the Indian roads. It will be based on the versatile K1 platform that also underpins the Kia Syros and Hyundai Venue. A strong hybrid powertrain is planned to join the next Sonet and Venue lineup to offer ultra-low running costs.
Engine Setup: it is most likely to utilise the 1.2L 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine clubbed with an electric motor and a small battery pack. The self-charging hybrid system will come with regenerative braking system.
Target Mileage: 30+ Kmpl
Key Details: this hybrid setup will also be offered on other compact Hyundai cars, including the next-gen Grand i10 Nios and the i20 hatchback. In fact, Hyundai is also preparing a 1.2L turbo petrol engine with hybrid setup.
Renault Bridger
Renault will introduce the Bridger concept based sub-4m SUV in the country in 2027. It is built on the localised RGMP (Renault Group Modular Platform) architecture that also underpins the Renault Duster. Alongside standard petrol and future EV derivatives, Renault is considering multi-mode hybrid options for the platform.
Engine Setup: it will get a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine paired with an e-motor, and a small battery pack.
Target Mileage: 28-30+ kmpl
Key Details: this SUV will have boxy styling, tailgate-mounted spare wheel, high ground clearance, and a spacious cabin with 400-litres of boot space.
Honda WR-V Hybrid
Honda is reportedly planning to source 1.2L engine from Horse Powertrain to power its next compact SUV, which is expected to be launched in 2028. The new engine will be compatible with petrol, hybrid and CNG fuel options.
Engine Setup: Horse Powertrain-sourced 1.2L petrol engine with hybrid setup.
Target Mileage: 30+ kmpl
Key Details: it will offer EV-like throttle power delivery, highly-efficient regenerative braking
