Hyundai Motor India Limited has started development of a pure-electric version of the Creta which is expected to go on sale in the country by 2025. Spy shots of the first prototype have emerged testing on the outskirts of Chennai near the company’s production plant.

You’ll notice that the spy shots reveal a protrusion under the body of the Creta which looks like a battery pack. Also, the SUV was shot close to an EV charging station, which confirms it's an electric Creta. While the rest of the exterior looks the same as the current-gen model, do note that this is only a very early prototype. The production model will very likely be based on the next-gen Creta.
However, there are no details on the battery pack or powertrain setup that Hyundai will be using for the production version of the Creta EV. If we had to guess, the automaker may use the same powertrain as the Kona Electric as the SUVs are comparable in size.
The Creta EV is expected to be launched around 2025 in India. Till then, Hyundai will continue with the Kona Electric and Ioniq 5 as the brand’s pure electric offerings. The automaker is also planning to localize its E-GMP electric platform which will be used for the Indian and global markets.
Upon launch, the Creta EV will be priced around Rs 20 - Rs 30 lakh and rival the likes of the upcoming Maruti eVX and the Seltos electric.
The automaker is currently gearing up for the launch of the all-new Verna on March 21 with bookings already open. Hyundai has also just revealed the first official images of the upcoming sedan, giving us a glimpse of new design language.
