Underpinned by new born-electric platform To get both RWD and AWD powertrains AR Rahman to design sounds for the new electric models
At its now annual 15 August showcase event, Mahindra & Mahindra showcased the Global Pick-Up concept and the new Thar.e concept.
In addition to the two new models, the company also confirmed that its current line-up brands the Scorpio, Bolero, and XUV models will be getting an electric powertrain in the future. These new models will be classified under the brand’s Born Electric category.
The automaker has brought in Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman to design the sounds of the new electric SUVs. It has also upgraded from Sony to Harman/Kardon as its audio provider. The new 16-speaker setup will get features like 3D surround sound, active noise cancellation, and Dolby Atmos.
Mahindra has also showcased an edge-to-edge infotainment system with three 12.3-inch screens that span the width of the dashboard. It will feature EV-specific menus and displays while a new HUD (heads-up display) will show AR visuals on the windscreen for driving, media, and navigation. Other notable features will include OTA updates, onboard 5G connectivity, and Vehicle-to-X capabilities. Additionally, the ADAS suite will be upgraded to Level 2 autonomous driving with new cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.
Mahindra also unveiled the specifications of the INGLO P1 dedicated EV platform. The XUV.e will use a single rear-axle mounted electric motor from Valeo that makes 231 bhp with 380 Nm of peak torque.
In comparison, the upcoming BE 05 and BE 07 will get their motors sourced from Volkswagen, with both single- and dual-motor powertrains to be offered. The rear motor makes 286 bhp with 535 Nm of peak torque while the front motor makes 109 bhp with 135 Nm of max torque. However, Mahindra did not reveal the combined power outputs of the dual-motor setup.
The first new Mahindra EV to arrive will be the XUV e8, the electric sibling of the XUV700, which is slated to be unveiled by December 2024. It will be followed by the XUV e9, set to be unveiled in April 2024. Mahindra is yet to reveal when the new electric Bolero and Scorpio will be launched.
