Japanese automaker Lexus recently revealed the New LM MPV at the Shanghai Motor Show. While its predecessor was sold in a select few markets, the second-gen model will be offered in more markets like the Middle East, Europe, India, and the United Kingdom. It will also go on sale in Japan for the first time. The New LM (Luxury Mover) is aimed at customers who are predominantly chauffeur-driven and want something different to a luxury SUV. We take a closer look.

The New Lexus LM is underpinned by Toyota’s GA-K platform, which will also be used by the upcoming Toyota Vellfire and Alphard. The LM’s front end features Lexus’ trademark spindle grille which is flanked by slim headlights with integrated DRLs. The side profile offers a redesigned glasshouse with chrome highlights, slightly flared wheel arches, and a strong shoulder line that starts from the rear doors. Towards the rear, the MPV provides a sculpted bootlid, integrated spoiler, and full-width LED tail lights.

Lexus LM will be offered with two seating options, a 4-seater and a 7-seater. As an MPV that is oriented for chauffeur-driven passengers, its interior provides multiple new features at the rear. This includes airline-style reclining seats, a 23-speaker audio system, pillow headrests, and a 48-inch widescreen television. Rear passengers will also be provided with a mini fridge, fold-out tables, rear wireless chargers, reading lights, an umbrella holder, and vanity mirrors.

The automaker has introduced a voice recognition system in the four-wheeler. The brand claims the system is specifically designed for rear passengers. It also caters to an overhead console on the roof that houses controls for the cabin temperature and rear doors. There is an additional control-panel between the rear seats that can adjust the ambient lighting, window blinds, seat functions, climate control, and audio settings. The manufacturer has stated that the new MPV’s interior is quieter than the outgoing model, offering 40 percent more insulation.
The driver of the vehicle also gets new features like a touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, panoramic-view monitor, and a digital rear-view monitor.

The brand will offer two petrol-hybrid powertrain options with the MPV. The LM350h will be powered by a 2.5-litre strong hybrid powertrain that pairs an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with dual electric motors. They make a combined power output of 264 bhp with 204 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are expected to be handled by an e-CVT automatic gearbox. A more powerful LM500h model will join the global lineup sometime later. However, details about this particular powertrain are yet to be revealed.
Lexus had showcased the First-Gen LM earlier this year at the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. The company confirmed the Next-Gen LM will be coming to India, but did not say when. Expect the luxury MPV to arrive by the end of 2023.
