Maruti Suzuki launched the fourth generation of the Swift today at an introductory price of Rs. 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The Japanese car brand has made an investment of Rs. 1,450 crore and will be manufacturing the Swift at its Gujarat plant. The Swift comes with a range of new features and technology to transform the sub-four-metre hatchback segment.
Maruti Suzuki has retained the clamshell body style of the Swift with minor upgrades on the outside. The swept-back headlights have been darkened and feature L-shaped DRLs beside the headlamps. There’s a new bumper which has a refreshed grille and fog lamps which are available with the higher trims.
Side proportions remain largely the same but the rear door handle gets a conventional position this time. Its C-pillar has been finished in glossy black creating a floating roof effect, Suzuki claimed. The new Swift also features 16-inch alloy wheels that get a machined finish.
At the back, the taillights get C-shaped DRLs and there is a rear camera as well under the Suzuki logo. The rear bumper has been redesigned as well and houses the four rear parking sensors. Maruti will offer the car in nine colours.
Inside is a story familiar to the Fronx and Baleno (sold by its premium Nexa outlets) and a lot of bits have been carried forward with the Swift. A floating SmartPlay Pro+ 9-inch touchscreen unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, hill hold assist, wireless charging, connected car tech and rear AC vents are to name a few additons.
Safety has been taken care of as six airbags have been made standard starting right from the LXi variant. ABS, ESP, EBD, hill hold assist and three-point seat belts have also been added.
It is powered by an all-new 3-cylinder, 1.2L Z-Series petrol engine, which replaces the fun-to-drive 1.2L K-Series 4-cylinder unit. The power and torque figures have fallen to 80.4 and 111.7 and peak power comes a little lower in the RPM range.
However, the highlight of this engine is that it can make up to 25.75 kilometres per litre with the hybrid system, which is best in class. Transmission options include a manual and AMT.
Maruti has retained the nomenclature of the hatchback with variants ranging from LXi to ZXi (O). Price for the base variant starts at Rs. 6.49 lakh and goes up to Rs. 9.64 lakh ex-showroom. Subscription for the car starts at Rs. 17, 436.
