New Mercedes A-Class Confirmed for 2028 with Hybrid and EV Power

New Mercedes A-Class confirmed for 2028 with hybrid and electric power Next-gen A-Class to offer improved space, ride, and advanced tech AMG and dual-motor EV variants expected in the upcoming model

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the A-Class isn’t going anywhere just yet. Instead, an all-new generation is on the way, and it’s expected to arrive globally in 2028 with both hybrid and electric options.

This comes as a bit of a shift from the brand’s earlier plan to phase out smaller models. Now, Mercedes seems to be taking a more balanced approach between EVs and traditional powertrains.

A Familiar Name, But With Big Changes

The next-generation A-Class will be built on the brand’s new MMA platform, which also underpins the latest Mercedes-Benz CLA.

This new architecture is designed to support both hybrid and electric setups, which means the upcoming A-Class will be more flexible and future-ready than before.

Hybrid and Electric Options on the Cards

Mercedes is expected to offer a mix of engine options with the new A-Class.

The hybrid version could come with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a small battery. Power figures may range between 156hp and 212hp, with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options likely.

On the electric side, things get more interesting. The A-Class EV is expected to share its tech with the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric, including an advanced 800V setup. Battery packs could range from 58kWh to 85kWh.

The base EV may offer around 224hp, while dual-motor versions could go up to 354hp. And yes, AMG versions are expected too, possibly pushing beyond the 500hp mark.

More Comfort, Better Drive

Mercedes is also working on improving how the new A-Class drives. A new five-link rear suspension is expected, which should make a noticeable difference in ride quality and handling.

That said, more affordable variants may still use a simpler setup.

Slightly Bigger, More Practical

The new A-Class is likely to grow in size. A longer wheelbase and wider stance should translate into more space inside the cabin.

Design-wise, don’t expect a radical change. Instead, it will be more of an evolution, with styling cues inspired by newer models like the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Interestingly, the car will sit a bit higher than before. This is mainly to make space for the battery in EV versions, but hybrid models will also follow a similar stance for consistency.

Focus on Everyday Usability

Inside, the A-Class will continue as a practical five-seater. Mercedes is also working on improving visibility and making it easier to get in and out of the car.

There are even talks of a sliding or adjustable rear seat, which could add more flexibility for passengers and luggage.

Why Mercedes Changed Its Mind

Originally, Mercedes-Benz planned to discontinue the A-Class as part of its push towards more premium and electric models.

However, slower-than-expected EV demand globally seems to have changed that plan. The brand now wants to keep entry-level models alive, but with a mix of hybrid and electric options.

There’s also a chance the A-Class name might not continue. Mercedes is considering aligning it with its newer naming style, similar to CLA and GLA, but nothing is final yet.

What About India?

In India, the A-Class hatchback was only available in the high-performance AMG version. Right now, the only model from this lineup on sale is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine, which starts at Rs 44.45 lakh (ex-showroom).
