At the recently held Kia EV Day, the automaker showcased the production-ready EV5 alongside the new EV3 and EV4 concepts. The new Kia EV5 was already revealed a few months earlier in China, but this was the first time it was globally unveiled. We take a closer look at the upcoming EV.
The 2024 Kia EV5 is a 5-seater electric SUV that will sit below the full-size EV9 in Kia’s global lineup. It shares the squared-off and rugged design of its bigger sibling but does get a unique ‘Tiger Nose’ grille. It will become the third model in Kia’s lineup to be underpinned by Hyundai’s E-GMP born-electric platform.
Moving inside, the EV5 gets twin-12.3-inch displays for the infotainment system and digital instrument console, with minimal physical buttons. There is also a separate 5-inch display for the climate control functions while a HUD is optional. The upholstery will be available with a range of recycled PET and bio-leather fabrics, while the seats themselves have reclining and massage functions.
The EV5 will be offered with different powertrain options depending on the market. Battery pack sizes vary from 58 kWh - 88 key. There will be standard and long-range variants, both using a single electric motor that makes 215 bhp. The long-range AWD model adds a rear electric motor to pump out 302 bhp of peak power. Kia stated that a performance-oriented EV5 GT will be introduced later as well.
In terms of range, the standard and long-range variants offer around 530 km and 720 km, respectively. The AWD model has a fully charged range of around 650 km. While the EV5 uses a 400V architecture instead of the EV9’s 800V one, it can still charge at speeds of up to 125 kW.
The EV5 is slated for a global launch next year, sometime around mid-2024. Kia will likely follow it up with the India launch by the end of 2024 or early 2025. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volvo XC40 Recharge.
