Tata’s Hybrid & CNG Plan For India Explained

India is adopting multi-powertrain strategy. Tata is evaluating hybrid tech, expand CNG based on demand.

The Indian automotive industry has entered a multi-powertrain era, as alternative fuels (including CNG, EV and hybrid) are steadily gaining share in passenger vehicle sales. In FY2026, over 13.8 lakh electrified vehicles were sold, accounting for around 30% of the market share. Toyota Kirloskar Motors, with offerings such as Hyryder and Innova Hycross, is currently leading the segment, followed by Maruti Suzuki and Honda.

Carmakers such as Hyundai Motor Company, Kia and MG Motor are now catching up and betting big on hybrids and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). However, indigenous automakers – Tata and Mahindra – have largely skipped hybrids and focusing heavily on EVs.

Tata’s Hybrid Plan For India

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, has stated that the company remains open to hybrid technology based on market demand. To deliver value to customers, Tata might evaluate hybrid vehicles at different points of time. However, even if the carmaker introduces hybrid technology, it will be aimed at boosting sales performance rather than addressing emissions alone.

He further clarified that Tata Motors isn’t against hybrid technology, but questions the need for incentivizing a tech that can already sustain itself. The company’s approach to hybrid adoption will depend on the segment and the right timing. From a competitive standpoint, Tata is expected to begin with the higher and larger SUV segments.

CNG Expansion Under Consideration

Most Tata offerings are over 4 metres in length, with major segments falling over 4.3 metres and 4.6 metres. Mr. Chandra said that the company is closely watching the 4.3 metre segment and if demand increases, Tata will expand its CNG product portfolio further. The current CNG lineup includes Tiago CNG, Tigor CNG, Altroz CNG, Punch CNG and Nexon CNG.
