Toyota Motor Corporation has officially started production of the Land Cruiser FJ. The SUV was recently showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show and is now being manufactured at Toyota’s Ban Pho plant in Thailand.
Deliveries of the Land Cruiser FJ will begin later this year. The SUV is currently available in a single VX trim and will be rolled out in phases across multiple global markets.
Diesel power has been a key part of the Land Cruiser family since 1973. Now, new reports suggest that Toyota is considering adding a diesel engine to the Land Cruiser FJ lineup as well.
However, the diesel version is not expected anytime soon. If approved, it is likely to arrive only around 2029.

The engine under consideration is the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel unit. This engine already powers models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 and Toyota Hilux.
It produces 204 PS and 500 Nm of peak torque. Toyota has also paired this engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in several global markets. This setup is available in models like the Hilux, Toyota Fortuner and the Land Cruiser 250.
The mild-hybrid system improves fuel efficiency, ensures smoother start-stop operation and enhances low-end torque. It is not yet confirmed whether the Land Cruiser FJ will receive this mild-hybrid diesel configuration.
For now, the Land Cruiser FJ comes with a 2.7-litre petrol engine. It produces 163 hp and 246 Nm of torque.
The petrol version is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system. While capable, the petrol engine offers significantly lower torque compared to the 2.8-litre diesel unit.
The diesel-powered Land Cruiser FJ is expected to debut first in Thailand when introduced. Japan could be the next market to receive it.
Toyota is also likely to consider strong hybrid or plug-in hybrid options in the future to meet stricter emission norms.
Deliveries of the petrol variant will begin in Thailand and Japan later this year. The SUV will also be launched in markets including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa in phases.
An India launch is expected around 2028. There are no confirmed plans for Europe or North America at this stage.
