Toyota is all set to enter the compact off-roader segment before the end of this year. If reports are to be believed, the new model will compete with the Suzuki Jimny lifestyle SUV. The new model will be introduced as a more robust alternative to the Corolla Cross.
Rumoured to be called the 'Land Cruiser FJ', the new off-roader will enter the production line in November. It will first go on sale in Thailand at the fag end of 2024. The new model will be based on the ladder-frame chassis, which also underpins the Hilux Champ base. This is basically a more affordable version of the conventional Hilux architecture.
The styling of the new off-roader will be inspired by the Compact Cruiser EV concept and the original FJ Cruiser. It will have a square body with straight lines and squared-off wheel arches. The new model is expected to have a wheelbase of around 2,750mm, which is significantly higher than the Jimny's 2,590mm. In fact, the off-roader will measure around 4.4 meters to 4.5 meters.
The new Toyota FJ Cruiser is reportedly to be offered with multiple engine options including petrol and diesel, hybrids and electrics. The SUV could receive a 204hp, 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine that powers the Hilux and Prado. It could also receive a 166hp, 2.7-litre petrol engine that is offered on the Hilux Champ. The powertrain will have an automatic gearbox option along with a 4x4 drivetrain with selection modes.
Toyota is currently developing a new 7-seater SUV based on the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Moreover, the next-gen Fortuner SUV is also under development that is scheduled to be launched sometime in 2025-26. The new FJ Cruiser could be positioned as a lifestyle SUV and will come as an alternative to the likes of the Jeep Compass/Meridian, Mahindra Scorpio N and the Thar Roxx.
