Early-2025 India Launch Underpinned by MQB-EVO platform Both SUV and Coupe body styles to be offered
Volkswagen has just announced that a new, three-row SUV is currently in development, and will replace the Tiguan AllSpace in the brand’s lineup. Reports suggest that it will be called the ‘Tayron’ in most markets except the USA, where it will continue to be known as the Tiguan. Volkswagen already sells an SUV named the Tayron in China. However, the new model will be a global product.
The new Tayron will be underpinned by VW’s MQB-Evo platform which is also being used by the new Tiguan and the upcoming next-gen Škoda Kodiaq. Since it will be a three-row SUV, the Tayron will use the long wheelbase version of the platform. It will also be differently styled compared to the latest Tiguan. Previously, the Tiguan and the Tiguan AllSpace had similar styling, differentiated only by their seating configurations.
Like the current-gen Tayron offered in China, VW will offer the new model in both SUV and coupe body styles. VW has also mentioned that the upcoming Tayron will be larger than the current Tiguan AllSpace to make the former a genuine 7-seat SUV.
VW will offer the new Tayron with either a turbo-petrol or a turbo diesel motor, both 2-litre units. It will be paired with a 48V mild-hybrid setup and a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
Like the new Tiguan, there will also be a couple of strong-hybrid options for the Tayron. The hybrid pairs a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with a 19.7 kWh battery pack, making 204 bhp or 272 bhp of peak power. It offers up to 100 km of electric-only range and supports 50 kW DC fast charging. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
The automaker is expected to globally unveil the new Tayron in 2024, followed by an India launch around early-2025 at the earliest. VW will likely bring the Tayron to India as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit to keep costs down and prices competitive.
