We all are aware of the fact that Tata Motors is all set to bring back the iconic Sierra brand name in India this year. The indigenous automaker showcased the all-new Sierra in its close-to-production version at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show. Unlike the OG model, which had a three-door design, the new one features five doors including flush door handles on all doors. The new Tata Sierra derives design inspiration from the old model, which was sold in the 1990s.
The original Sierra was launched in the early 1990s and discontinued in 2003. It was the first indigenously developed SUV in the country, which failed to generate volume for the carmaker in its later phase of existence. One of the major reasons of its failure was the higher pricing and impracticality. The price of the old Sierra was significantly higher than most vehicles at that time. Since Indian buyers were budget-conscious and SUVs were not the preferred choices, its sales started declining drastically.
The older version had a three-door design (two front doors and one tailgate), so it was inconvenient to access to its rear seats. Furthermore, Tata Motors was not known for its reliability and after-sales services at that point in time. Several Sierra owners faced mechanical issues with the SUV. In fact, Tata’s service centres were not well-equipped to resolve complex issues. The old Tata Sierra was offered with an underpowered 68PS, 2.0L naturally aspirated diesel engine. A few years later, the carmaker introduced the SUV with a 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine, which was good for 91bhp and 186Nm. The Sierra also failed to impress on the fuel efficiency front.

The new Tata Sierra will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options, along with an electric powertrain. Tata hasn’t yet revealed its engine specifications. However, the SUV’s new version is likely to feature the brand’s new 1.5L direct-injection turbocharged petrol and 2.0L diesel engines. The four-cylinder petrol engine pushes out a maximum power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 280Nm between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. Tata’s new petrol engine is boosted with dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump and an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head.
Moreover, the new TGDi engine has a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger, which is claimed to offer better torque from lower in the rev range. This petrol engine is also claimed to offer reduced cost of ownership along with a longer service life. The 2.0L diesel engine pushes out a peak power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer. The SUV might also come with the optional 4X4 drivetrain system.
The Tata Sierra EV is expected to be offered with two battery packs, ranging between 60kWh – 80kWh. Buyers might also get the single and dual motor configurations. Its electric range will be over 500km on a single charge.
