MG Motor India is planning to introduce a new electric SUV in the Indian market soon. According to the latest media reports, the automaker will be rebranding the Baojun Yep as an MG product for our market. Following the global unveiling of the Yep a few months ago, MG’s parent company, SAIC, has now filed a design patent for the SUV in India. We take a closer look.
Looking at the design patent, the Baojun Yep for India will remain largely similar to the Chinese model. The most noticeable difference will be the new MG badges replacing the Baojun logo both outside and inside.
The recently unveiled Yep is a small electric SUV with retro styling and a 3-door layout. It is underpinned by the same Global Small Electric Vehicle Platform as the Comet EV. The Yep’s front end features square LED headlights, a slim grille and a chunky bumper. Moving to the sides, it offers flared wheel arches with black body cladding, roof rails, and blacked-out A-pillars for a floating roof effect. While the patent does not reveal it, the vehicle's rear end will feature a simple and squared-off design. In China, it is offered with an optional LCD display on the boot lid that shows personalized messages.
The Yep uses a 28.1 kWh battery pack that powers a single electric motor. Combined they are expected to deliver a maximum power output of 68 bhp with 140 Nm of peak torque. The electric vehicle is believed to have a range of 303 km on a single full charge. However, we expect the India-spec model to get a different locally sourced battery pack like the Comet EV.
Reports suggest that the Baojun Yep is likely to be introduced in India around 2025. This is because MG will launch the electric SUV after its second production facility in Gujarat is completed.
MG will use heavy localization of parts for the Baojun Yep, which should help it have an affordable and attractive price tag.
