BYD Sealion 6 and Leopard 8 PHEVs likely to launch in India Sealion 6 PHEV testing begins
BYD India is known for its electric vehicles in the Indian market. With a new teaser, the Chinese auto giant has confirmed that it will soon enter the hybrid space of our market.
The company has already patented the Leopard 8 PHEV, and is currently testing the Sealion 6 PHEV on the Indian roads. Let's talk in detail about these two upcoming plug-in hybrid vehicles in India


The BYD Sealion 6 PHEV will be the brand’s first-ever PHEV in our market. Globally known as the Seal U or Song Plus DM-i, the new SUV will be introduced as a premium midsize SUV. The new SUV is equipped with BYD’s Super Hybrid (DM-1) technology and features a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor. It is packed with an 18.3kWh battery, and a 145 kW electric motor offering 300Nm, and a combined power output of 217.5 PS. This is the entry-level variant with 80km EV-only range.
The higher-spec model has a 1.5L petrol engine with an all-wheel-drive setup and an electric motor rated at 150kW. The engine produces 130.5 PS and 220Nm, while the combined power output stands at 323.5 PS. The AWD version offers a pure electric range of 70Km. It is expected to offer a combined range of over 1,000km on a full tank and charge. In terms of features, the SUV gets a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, and a 10-speaker infinity sound system.

It will be an off-roader with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Based on a body-on-frame chassis, the Leopard 8 will come as a rival to the Land Rover Defender 110. It measures 5195mm in length, 1994mm in width and 1905mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2920mm. The BYD Leopard 8 is available in two seating configurations - 6-seat and 7-seat - with former having captain seats in the second-row.
Inside the cabin, the SUV gets a triple screen dashboard comprising a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 17.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment unit and a 12.3-inch co-occupant entertainment screen. The SUV’s plug-in hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.0L turbo petrol engine, a 36.8kWh battery and dual-motor setup. The combined power and torque output stands at 748hp and 760Nm, respectively. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via an e-CVT automatic unit. It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph acceleration in just 4.8 seconds. It is claimed to offer an all-electric range of 100km, and offers a driving range of up to 1200km in a full tank.
