BYD is preparing its first hybrid SUV launch for India. Sealion 6 and Atto 2 DM-i are likely launch candidates. The SUV could offer over 1,000 km combined driving range.
BYD is finally preparing to enter India’s plug-in hybrid SUV space. After focusing entirely on electric vehicles in the country so far, the Chinese carmaker has officially teased its first plug-in hybrid model for the Indian market.
The upcoming SUV will use BYD’s globally popular DM-i hybrid technology, which combines electric driving capability with a petrol engine for longer journeys. The move signals a major shift in BYD’s India strategy as the brand looks to expand beyond pure EVs.
The teaser shared by BYD India confirms that the new SUV will feature the company’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system.
Unlike regular strong hybrids, plug-in hybrids can travel much longer distances on electric power alone before the petrol engine becomes active. This makes them ideal for daily city commuting while also reducing range anxiety during long highway trips.
BYD has not officially revealed the SUV name yet, but two global models are currently being linked to the India launch - the BYD Sealion 6 and the BYD Atto 2 DM-i.

Among the two SUVs, the BYD Sealion 6 appears to be the more likely candidate for India.
The SUV was showcased at Auto Expo 2025, and test vehicles have already been spotted on Indian roads. Globally, the Sealion 6 sits above the Atto lineup and carries a more premium positioning.
The SUV features sleek styling, large dimensions and a modern cabin layout. If launched here, it could compete against models like the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Meridian and Volkswagen Tiguan.
International versions of the Sealion 6 use a 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid setup paired with either an 18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh battery pack.
The front-wheel-drive version produces around 218 hp, while the more powerful all-wheel-drive model delivers close to 344 hp.
One of the biggest highlights is the claimed range. The SUV can offer an electric-only range of up to 140 km, while the combined driving range crosses 1,090 km under NEDC testing conditions.
That makes it one of the longest-range plug-in hybrid SUVs globally.
The smaller BYD Atto 2 DM-i is another SUV that could make its way to India. The SUV was spotted testing in the country last year and is positioned below the Sealion lineup internationally.
It uses a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with smaller battery packs ranging from 7.8 kWh to 18 kWh.
Depending on the version, power output ranges between 166 hp and 212 hp, while combined range figures are close to 1,000 km.
Plug-in hybrid technology is slowly becoming more relevant in India, especially as charging infrastructure continues to grow gradually outside major cities. Many people want the lower running costs and smooth driving experience of EVs, but still prefer the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer trips.
A plug-in hybrid offers both. In city conditions, many owners may rarely use petrol if regular charging access is available. At the same time, highway travel becomes stress-free thanks to the backup combustion engine.
