Major Indian car manufacturers released their April automobile sales report today, as is the norm on the first day of every month. The positive sentiment in the domestic four-wheeler market was evident as Tata witnessed a 12% year-on-year growth in April, while over 50,000 cars from Hyundai’s stable were bought.
At the top of the heap, Maruti Suzuki sold a record 1.68 lakh units to register a 4.7% growth on a year-over-year basis. Total domestic and sales including passenger vehicles and exports stood at 1.46 lakh and 22,160 lakh units, respectively. This translates into over 30% y-o-y growth in international trade alone. Meanwhile, sales of passenger cars here clocked the 1.38 lakh mark.
Hyundai continued with the positive growth sentiment with a combined (domestic and international) sales figure of 63,710 last month, up 9.5% from April 2023, during which the Korean carmaker sold 58,201 units. Exports were significantly up at 58.82% to 13,500. Month-on-month sales fell by 2,800.
Indigenous carmaker Tata Motors sold 77,521 vehicles in total, including 76,399 units in the domestic market (68,514 sold in April 2023). Passenger vehicles sales stood at 47,883 (1.86% year-over-year growth). Whereas, passenger carriers sold in the commercial segment went up by 118% to 4,316. Over 6,000 EVs were sold in the previous month by the brand.
With a year-over-year increase of 32%, Japanese car giant Toyota sold 20,494 units in India, while exports stood at 1,794 vehicles. Out of the total units sold, 18,700 automobiles were sold in the domestic market alone. The reports reveal a 48% increase in sales volume during the January to April period of this year.
MG Motor India sold 4,485 cars last month with electric vehicles contributing to 34% of the total units retailed. This marked a 1.45% fall y-o-y with a difference of 66 vehicles. A similar story continues with the month-on-month figure of -163, representing a decline of 2.09% from March’s 4,648 car sales.
