Honda Civic Type R Not Launching in India

Honda Civic Type R will not launch in India Rumours sparked after VW Golf GTI India debut Civic Type R to be phased out globally by 2026

Amid swirling rumours sparked by the recent launch of the Volkswagen Golf GTI in India, speculations about Honda bringing the Civic Type R to the country have gained traction. However, the carmaker has no plans to introduce the high-performance hatchback in the Indian market.

Civic Type R Global Phase-Out Underway

The current-generation FL5 Civic Type R is already on its way out globally, with Honda introducing a limited-run Ultimate Edition in Europe as a farewell to the iconic hot hatch. Just 40 units of this commemorative model will be sold in the UK, celebrating 28 years of the Civic Type R's legacy. The decision to phase it out comes in response to stricter Euro 7 emissions norms set to come into effect by 2026, which the Civic Type R does not comply with.

The Ultimate Edition is finished in a Championship White colour and features red decals, a carbonfibre rear wing, blacked-out roof and accents, and exclusive ‘Ultimate Edition’ badging. Inside, it adds red floor mats with metal badges, enhanced ambient lighting, carbonfibre touches, and a gift box with a numbered plaque, carbon key ring, and car cover.

However, mechanically, it remains unchanged with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine making 329hp and 420Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual. It can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 275 km/h.

What’s Next for Honda India?

Honda’s India portfolio currently includes the Amaze, City, and the Elevate SUV. Earlier this year, the company also hinted at the possible introduction of the ZR-V hybrid SUV to its Indian lineup. However, performance-oriented models like the Civic Type R remain off the table for now.
