Renault has recently been spotted testing an updated version of its entry-level model, the Kwid. The hatchback, known for its budget-friendly pricing and compact design, could be undergoing a significant transformation. While new spy shots reveal some intriguing updates, they also raise questions about whether the refreshed Kwid will continue with its internal combustion engine (ICE) or transition to an electric powertrain. Let’s dive into what’s been spotted so far.
The latest spy images reveal a test mule of the Renault Kwid with a major makeover on the exterior. Up front, the test car shows a newly redesigned face, with updated LED DRLs and halogen headlamps, along with a new Renault logo. This redesign could be part of Renault’s effort to refresh the Kwid’s look and give it a more contemporary feel.
While the front end has seen significant changes, the side profile of the test car remains familiar, with squared-off wheel arches, flap-style door handles, and steel wheels covered with caps (elements from the current ICE version).

The rear end is also redesigned, featuring new tail lamps, a reshaped bumper, and a roof spoiler. These updates indicate that Renault is giving the Kwid a much-needed facelift while keeping some of the familiar elements intact.

The biggest question raised by these spy shots is whether the updated Kwid is an internal combustion engine (ICE) model or an electric vehicle (EV). While the exterior design might suggest a regular facelift, the possibility of a new EV variant can't be ruled out. As the automotive industry moves toward electrification, Renault might be preparing to offer an electric version of the Kwid, following the growing trend of affordable EVs in the Indian market.
If Renault chooses to make the Kwid an electric vehicle, we can expect improved battery range, charging efficiency, and a shift in the powertrain, making it a game-changer for the budget EV segment in India.

Step inside the test mule, and you’ll notice some significant changes as well. The interior of the Kwid has been updated with a new layout that features a larger touchscreen infotainment system. This comes with a refreshed user interface, along with a new steering wheel design and a digital instrument cluster. These changes suggest that Renault is planning to make the Kwid’s cabin more modern and user-friendly, even in the entry-level segment.
If Renault continues with the ICE version of the Kwid, it’s likely that the powertrains will be carried over from the current models, possibly with minor tweaks for better efficiency and performance. However, if the carmaker decides to introduce an electric variant, we can expect significant changes to the powertrain. An electric Kwid would likely feature a more powerful electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and improved range to compete with other affordable EVs in the Indian market.
