The Mahindra Thar RWD has been on sale for just around a month and has instantly proven to be a success story for Mahindra. As per the latest reports, waiting periods on the SUV have already extended up to 18 months.
While the Thar 2WD petrol has a waiting period of up to 3 months, demand for the 2WD diesel is far higher, with waiting periods stretching to 18 months in select cities. In comparison, the Thar 4x4 has a waiting period of just 3 months on all variants.
The biggest reason for this long waiting period of the Thar 2WD diesel is its value-for-money proposition. Being under 4-meters in length and powered by a 1.5-litre motor means the RWD diesel model is eligible for tax benefits that cars like the Tata Nexon and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza enjoy.
Currently, prices for the Thar 2WD AX (O) and LX are Rs 4.17 lakh and Rs 3.88 lakh less than the equivalent 4WD models.

The Thar RWD is offered with two powertrain options, the 1.5-litre turbodiesel that makes 117 bhp with 300 Nm of peak torque and a 2-litre turbo-petrol pumping out 152 bhp with 320 Nm of max torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual for the former and a 6-speed torque converter automatic for the latter.
Prices for the Mahindra Thar 2WD range from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom). However, these are introductory prices and are applicable for the first 10,000 bookings only.
The closest rival to the Thar 2WD will be the recently unveiled Jimny 5-door, which is due to go on sale around March-April 2023. While Maruti’s SUV is expected to be priced similarly to the Mahindra, it is a 5-door model and will be offered with AWD.
