The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door is probably the most awaited new launch in 2023. While the car has been spied multiple times revealing interior and exterior details, we now have more information on the powertrain expected on the 5-door model.
The Indian auto giant will be offering multiple powertrain options at launch on the Thar 5-door. Reports suggest that both the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engines will be available on the Thar 5-door model. Due to the increase in weight, we expect the new model to offer a higher power and torque figures similar to the new Mahindra Scorpio N.
In terms of transmission options, the car will come equipped with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque automatic gearbox. Interestingly, Mahindra will also offer a 4x2 option on the Thar 5-door, helping the brand price the SUV aggressively. However, it will not be offered with the 1.5-litre turbodiesel that is available on the 3-door 4x2 model.
Visually, the new 5-door model will retain the Thar’s now-iconic butch design with the boxy proportions and flared wheel arches. The biggest difference would be the longer wheelbase, expected to be 300 mm more, and the additional two rear doors. Additionally, the Thar 5-door may also get all-new body panels as the automaker may increase the track width for increased stability and balance.
Moving inside, spy shots reveal that the overall interior design will be very similar to the Thar 3-door. However, the 5-door model could get new features like a bigger touchscreen infotainment screen, a front centre armrest, and a sunglass holder. The longer wheelbase and second set of doors also mean that rear passengers will be seated more comfortably while also getting a much larger boot.
The automaker is expected to launch the Thar 5-door around mid-2023. Upon launch, it will have the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door as its only direct rival. The recently launched Maruti Jimny is smaller and makes less power, but may rival the Thar as a lifestyle purchase.
