After months of speculation and leaks, Mahindra & Mahindra has finally launched a new entry level line of its popular off-roader, the Thar in India. Available with both petrol and diesel engine options, the vehicle is offered in 3 new variants at a starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
From the outside, the two models (RWD and 4X4) are identical to the layman’s eye. Differences include missing 4X4 badge from front fender along with the choice of two new paint schemes: Blazing Bronze and the Everest White.
Moving to the inside, the SUV continues to maintain the familiar cabin, but skips on the 4X4 specific controls. These include the replacement of the 4X4 gear selector with a cup holder.
A new addition to the interior is the new auto start/stop function that is accessed via a button on the dashboard. Excluding these changes, the SUV continues to house a familiar equipment list that includes a large 7.0-inch touchscreen system, cruise control, electrically adjustable ORVM, traction control, hill descent control and more.

Like the more expensive model, the New Mahindra Thar RWD will continue to be offered with both a petrol and diesel engine option. While the petrol is the familiar 2.0-litre unit that produces around 152 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque, the diesel is a new, smaller 1.5-litre unit that is rated for a maximum 117 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.
While the vehicle is only available with a hard top, it gets both an automatic (petrol only) and manual (diesel only) gearbox option.
Customers can order their Thar RWD models in both the LX and AX (O) variants. The AX(O) (Diesel MT) is priced at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The LX (Diesel MT) and the LX (Petrol AT) cost Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively.
Much to the delight of the customers, Mahindra has finally decided to introduce an electronic brake locking differential to replace the old mechanical locking differential on the 4X4 models for 2023. Developed by Bosch, the new system uses electronics to offer better traction during serious off-roading.
