The Mahindra Thar is one of the most capable 4x4s you can buy in India today, across any price point. However, if you’re planning to buy a New Thar, there is some bad news for you. In what seems as a cost cutting measure, the automaker will be removing the mechanically locking rear differential as standard feature.
Till now, the top end AX Opt and LX variants of the Mahindra Thar came with a rear mechanical locking differential as standard fitment. It could be operated by a switch on the dashboard. However, the locking diff will be available as an option on only the top-spec diesel Thar models, with the petrol not getting this feature at all.
The Thar will still come with off-road centric equipment like automatic hub locks and brake locking differential as standard on the top variants. Expect the petrol-powered models to get the brake locking differential for the rear axle as well.
Diff locks are a handy feature on low traction surfaces where it is harder to put the power down precisely. Both mechanical and brake locking diffs manage traction by sending equal power to both wheels to provide maximum traction. While a mechanical diff can transfer up to 50 percent of power to each wheel, a brake locking differential can manage traction by detecting wheel slip.
While deleting the rear locking differential will cut costs for Mahindra, there is no change in pricing for the consumer. Prices for the Thar range from Rs 13.59 lakh - Rs 16.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
The hardcore SUV is available in both petrol and diesel options. The former uses a 2-litre mStallion 150 TGDi motor that churns out 150 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque as it comes mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
The diesel on the other hand uses a 2.2-litre mHawk 130 engine that makes a maximum power output of 130bhp with 300 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are carried out by a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
