Maruti aiming for heavy localization of parts to keep costs down eVX electric motor and battery pack to be produced at Gujarat facility Maruti already makes batteries for export markets
Maruti Suzuki cars is currently working on its first all-electric model, the eVX which is slated to launch around mid to late 2024. Toyota, Maruti’s partner in the eVX’s developments, will be launching its version of the EV sometime in 2025. It will be produced at Maruti’s production facility in Gujarat, which will also be the export hub for international markets. We take a closer look.
The Maruti eVX will have a high percentage of localised parts, including the battery pack, to help keep production costs low. Rahul Bharti, executive director of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, recently stated, "It is not enough to simply launch a model with imported batteries and motors. Our plan is that when we launch an EV, it should be locally made. So we will have a localised battery and motor in our EV and to build scale, we will also export the model from India.”
Upon launch, the Maruti eVX will compete against the likes of the MG ZS EV and the Tata Nexon EV. It will be interesting to see how Maruti will price it against the latter which is based on a modified ICE platform. The eVX is also expected to face increased competition as Hyundai is planning to introduce the Creta EV around the same price point.
Maruti’s Gujarat facility is already manufacturing batteries for hybrid vehicles, with EV battery packs to be built as well in the near future. The automaker has started exports to other markets and is expected to reach Rs 1,000 crore by the end of 2024.
