Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch an all-new rugged SUV that will look similar to the G-Class, in the near future. In fact, Ola Kallenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, has officially confirmed the smaller G-Class is coming as a ‘son or daughter of the iconic big G’.
The ‘baby G-Class’ will not replace the iconic G-Class but will aim to bolster Mercedes’ SUV lineup. The ‘little G’ will be underpinned by a unique platform based on the upcoming EQG SUV that will offer enhanced off-road capabilities. Mercedes Benz cars chief designer Gordon Wagner said that the upcoming SUV will heavily borrow design cues from the full-size G-Class. “It will have its own character, but it will be a G,” he said.
Mercedes is expected to offer both pure electric and ICE-powertrain options on the ‘baby G’ upon launch. The former will have an 800V electric architecture that will let the SUV add around 400 km of range in just 15 minutes via a 350 kW DC fast charger. Mercedes is also planning to offer the electric ‘little G’ with both lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC) and lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries with capacities ranging from 58 kWh - 85 kWh. Additionally, a plug-in hybrid option may also be available in some markets.
The automaker has stated that the ‘little G’ will likely arrive sometime around 2026. Gordon Wagner stated, “It will be further up in the market than a compact car. I’m not here to talk about price, but segment-wise, it will probably be above a C-segment car."
Mercedes is yet to confirm if the ‘little G’ class is coming to India. The automaker already offers a list of SUVs such as the G-Class, GLS, GLE, and GLC.
