Suzuki Cars has just unveiled the next-gen Swift at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show. The concept looks nearly production-ready, with a global launch expected next year. It will arrive in India as the next-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift sometime during 2024. Being an all-new model, the hatchback gets a fresh design and an updated interior. We take a closer look.
The Japanese automaker had released concept images of the Swift earlier this month, with the Tokyo Motor Show its first public display. In terms of styling, it retains the recognisable design of the Swift but does get new elements. The front headlights with LED DRLs are sharper than before while the bonnet is now a clamshell unit. Even the grille is larger with a new dark chrome and gloss black finish while the bumper is more angular as well.
The new Swift’s side profile features a strong and longer shoulder that runs the entire length of the car. It also gets new doors with the rear units having their door handles placed at the conventional position instead of the pillar. At the rear, the next-gen Swift looks sharper as well with new angular LED tail lights, sculpted bumper, and tweaked boot lid.
Moving inside, the next-gen Swift’s interior remains a familiar place. It still gets analogue dials with a MID on the instrument cluster while the 9-inch infotainment system, steering wheel, and climate control switches are similar to the units on the Baleno. Even the slightly-angled towards the driver dashboard design of the current Swift is retained. However, it does get new central AC vents positioned below the infotainment system and the dashboard features a dual-tone finish.
Furthermore, the new Swift on display at the Tokyo Motor Show is equipped with ADAS features and remains to be seen if the tech makes it to our market. Currently, Maruti does not offer ADAS on any of its models in India.
While the display model of the new Swift may be a hybrid, as the badging on the back suggests, India will not be getting this powertrain. Instead, the next-gen Swift will get a new 1.2-litre three cylinder Z12E petrol engine that makes 82 bhp with 108 Nm of max torque in its international guise. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox, while the Japan model will be offered with a CVT gearbox. Fuel efficiency figures 23.4 kmpl which is on par with the current generation model.
Expect Maruti to introduce the new Swift in India by mid-to-late-2024. Upon launch, it will rival the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Tata Tiago.
